[Starlingx-discuss] [docs] [meeting] Docs team notes 15-Sep-21
by Camp, MaryX 15 Sep '21

15 Sep '21
Hello all, Here are this week's docs team meeting minutes (short form). Details in [2]. Join us if you have interest in StarlingX docs! We meet on Wednesdays 12:30 PST.   [1]   Call logistics: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Starlingx/Meetings   [2]   Tracking Etherpad: https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/stx-documentation thanks, Mary Camp ========== 15-Sep-21 All -- reviews merged since last meeting: 7 Most are in R5 branch. All -- bug status -- 19 total - team agrees to defer all low priority LP until the upstreaming effort is completed. 7 LP are WIP against API documentation, which is generated from source code (low priority). 2 new LP this week. Still having the situation of duplicated issues in Jira (downstream) vs LP (upstream) and how to track them. Retrospective - the WR team had 2 sessions. One of the items for docs: Discussion about traceability for doc issues that were reported downstream and fixed in the upstream. If you aren't the issue owner/raiser, there isn't good tracking. Customer reported issues may need improved tracking and traceability. We will continue to discuss the feedback, and figure out actions. Discussed R6 vs R5 install guides in master/working branch We are currently maintaining 3 folders of install guides (R5 and R6 in master, R5 in R5 branch). How can we reduce all the overhead involved with that? Are the R5 changes slowing? What if we eliminate R6 folder now, then maintain r5 folder in master and cherry pick to R5 branch. Will users notice R6 is moved? Add a redirect/explanation? Definitely we want to be aware of this for next release cycle, we don't want to make the R7 install folder right away. Right now the R5/R6 files are nearly identical, just the labels are different. If we could figure out a way to make a wrapper around the r5 docs, then it would solve the problem. Is it too close to R6 to mess with this? We don't want to do a ton of work now, then have to undo it next week or whenever the R6 install changes start coming... Segue into: doc organization - most of the guides have 2 big directories: Kubernetes and OpenStack Contents section - makes sense in the upstream, but sort of meaningless to downstream users. Would be helpful to make the contents in an include file so it is removed from the downstream files. This change is coming soon, Ron will submit reviews. One more item, we aren't making a decision today: rethinking how the downstream builds work. part of the new/improved solution will be: make all filenames unique (now it is tricky with "overview.rst" in different folders) possibly create a utility to make a stub file with a guaranteed unique id -- would spit it out for you. Future discussion: Retiring the docs that are not required in the downstream / replacements.

OS Distro * Debian build instrastructure patches to be merged upstream * 3 out of 18 were posted, still working on more patches to come * use the same topics for the 3 patches posted * open a subtask under jira to say they will be addressing the comments (good to have feture/improvement) in a subtask * acknowledge the comment in the review (please the patch submitter to either ack or nack the comments, especially when submitting changes, acknowledge if the change is related to a comment) * Reviewer please put either (GoodTohave) or (MustHave) in the comment so that the patch submitter will know what to do and be able to move forward * Setup a separate channel for review of the patches/for tool's issues * Is there a new or update spec for the build systems? Please share the latest spec. * Scott will send some questions for the team to answer related to the structure work (not necessarily the workflow) * Mark posted 2 spec for builds, need another one for Q&A. * Will need to update the confluence page in StarlingX to show how the users use this system * Conversion flock packages converting to Debian package format. * Went through initial phase of conversion on some packages * Debian package format change to added a meta data file in the package format * Bob send a some suggestion on the tools, will need the team to answer/modify * Also the same with workflow, and/or implment Chuck's the suggestions to implementation * It will be good to get off the stable branch and just use the StarlingX's master. * Will expect to have a spec for Deiban package format as well.

by Wang, Linda 15 Sep '21

15 Sep '21
09/15/2001 Agenda items: Attendees: Davlet Panech, Steve Geary, Charles Short, Linda Wang, Bill Zvonar, Mark Asselstine, Frank Miller, Bob Church 1. OS Distro * 5.10 Kernel Schedule * still new, how often do we want to do stable updatees, and when to stop. * Debian patches going upstream: * https://review.opendev.org/q/topic:%22debian-build%22+(status:open%20OR%20s… * currently 10 people are using the build environment. * Yue Tao indicates there are 9 more commits for build coming in the next 2 weeks * Question on one of the commits: https://review.opendev.org/c/starlingx/tools/+/804410 * the code is complex, so need to understand what the code is doing. * using the build aspect of the OBS. need to continue the discussion with developer since the implementation has deviated from original design. * reusing and modify the helmchart, so the team can use it. * Building bridge to the Debian community now that the patches are going upstream now that some of the patches are being posted to upstream community. * Mark is spread really thin, so will start look into it. but the priority is still getting the patches into Debian build system. * Currently will accumlate the technical debt, but will build bridge to the community members, and get those technical debt upstream. * Challenge with pushing patches to Debian community is to get the maintainer to understand the why of the patches, or the solution of an issue, so that they will accept it. * Integration with Pulp and Apily is essential * STX 6.0 Deliverables * Debian OS Migration: New stx build tool * Debian OS Migration Build system
