[Starlingx-discuss] Mailman v3 migration for StarlingX mailing lists 2023-09-21
by Jeremy Stanley 27 Sep '23

27 Sep '23
On Thursday, September 21 at 15:30 UTC, the OpenDev Collaboratory systems administrators will be migrating the lists.starlingx.io mailing list site from the aging Mailman 2.1.29 server to a newer Mailman 3.3.8 deployment. This maintenance window is expected to last no more than one hour. The key takeaways are as follows: * There will be a brief outage for the site while DNS is updated and configuration, subscriber lists and message archives are imported, but incoming messages should correctly queue at the sender's end and arrive at the conclusion of our work * Because this is on a new server, there are new IP addresses from which list mail will be originating: 162.209.78.70 and 2001:4800:7813:516:be76:4eff:fe04:5423 * Moderation queues will not be copied to the new server, so moderators are encouraged to process any held messages prior to the migration time in order to avoid losing them * Anyone wishing to adjust their list subscriptions, or handle moderation or list configuration after the migration, needs to use the Sign Up button on the Web page to create a new account; it will be linked to your imported roles as soon as you confirm by following a URL from an E-mail message the server sends you, and is global for all sites on the server so you only need to do this once * The software providing Web front-ends for list management and archive browsing is entirely new in Mailman v3 and therefore has a much different appearance, though we've added appropriate redirects and frozen copies of old archives in order to accommodate existing hyperlinks If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to follow up on the service-discuss mailing list or find us in the #opendev channel on the OFTC IRC network. -- Jeremy Stanley

[Starlingx-discuss] Including StarlingX in university mentorship programs
by Ildiko Vancsa 26 Sep '23

26 Sep '23
Hi StarlingX Community, I’m reaching out to you about getting StarlingX included in the university mentorship programs that the OpenInfra Foundation is fostering. Background: The OpenInfra Foundation has been working with universities as well as other organizations to run mentorship programs, where students and mentees are contributing to OpenInfra projects as part of the programs. So far the most programs have been targeting OpenStack and Kata Containers. Recently there have been interest in adding StarlingX to these programs as a participating project! Some details about the programs: - Students and mentees are working on tasks identified by mentors from the participating open source community. * Mentors usually try to come up with ideas for work items that can realistically fit the program’s timeframe, knowing that students often have much less knowledge and experience than working professionals. * You can find previous project proposals here for reference: https://etherpad.opendev.org/p/CM-project-proposals - University programs as well as other mentorship programs have fixed time periods, within which the students need to finish their project. * University programs are typically last a single semester - either August to December or January to May * Outreachy is a 3-month mentorship program that also runs twice a year * Other programs might be longer or operate with a different cadence - Mentors are project contributors who volunteer to participate in these programs * Mentors identify the project/task that students are going to be working on * Mentors help students throughout the course of the mentorship program - Often having a weekly or bi-weekly sync meeting to ensure the students make progress and have their questions answered - Helping students and mentees to get in touch with the broader community, and help them communicate and get their questions answered on the community’s communication channels You can find more information about the programs and how they work in the below articles and presentation recording: - https://superuser.openinfra.dev/articles/university-program-partner-with-in… - https://superuser.openinfra.dev/articles/contributor-qa-a-college-students-… - https://superuser.openinfra.dev/articles/students-of-openinfra-ashley-rodri… - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygikkNAYL0w&ab_channel=OpenInfraFoundation This would be a great opportunity for the StarlingX community to raise further awareness of the project, gain new contributors and further enhance onboarding documentation and processes. Please let me know if you have questions to any of the above. Who from the community would be interested and available to volunteer as mentors? Thanks and Best Regards, Ildikó ——— Ildikó Váncsa Director of Community Open Infrastructure Foundation
