Proposal to move forward: * Tooling: The preferred tool in last week’s conversation was Matrix - https://matrix.org - It is an open tool, which ensures continued access to the platform and its features - It is more modern than IRC
* Format: The idea came up to create multiple channels for the StarlingX project - We can keep the all-community channel - We can create channels for each project team, that are more topic specific - We also have the option to create a channel for newcomers, which could include troubleshooting type of conversations as well [...]
If it assists in the decision making, the OpenDev Collaboratory has a Matrix homeserver which can host channels. The Zuul community is making use of this option, with their primary discussion channel being #zuul:opendev.org for the past few years already. Our GerritBot can be told to join specific Matrix channels and report on change events similarly to how it works on IRC (feel free to join the Zuul channel if you want to see what that ends up looking like). We have plans to port some of our other IRC bots to Matrix as well, and help with that is always welcome of course. A middle ground, instead of a pure Matrix channel, is to join IRC channels through Matrix's OFTC bridge. Users who are connecting to IRC that way get access to basically all of Matrix's native features, while people connecting with a traditional IRC client can still mostly see what they're saying and vice versa (Matrix features like multi-line comments, inline media and fancy formatting are transformed into summaries with URLs to view the rest in a browser). -- Jeremy Stanley
