[Starlingx-discuss] TSC Election Campaigning started
Hi StarlingX Community, The StarlingX TSC Election Campaigning Period has now started [1] and will end on November 15 at 2045 UTC. During the next couple days, you are all encouraged to ask the candidates questions about their platforms [2], opinions on StarlingX, community governance, and anything else that will help you to better determine how you will vote. This is the time to raise any issues you wish the future TSC to consider, and to evaluate the opinions of the nominees prior to their election. Candidates: Each of you has posted a platform[2], and announced your nomination to the project contributors. From this point, you are encouraged to ask each other questions about the posted platforms, and begin discussion of any points that you feel are particularly important during the next cycle. While you are not yet TSC members for the upcoming term, your voices and opinions about the issues raised in your platforms and questions raised by the wider community will help ensure that the future TSC has the widest possible input on the matters of community concern, and the electorate has the best information to determine the ideal TSC composition to address these and other issues that may arise. Thanks and Best Regards, Ildikó, on behalf of the StarlingX election officials[3] [1] https://docs.starlingx.io/election/ [2] https://opendev.org/starlingx/election/src/branch/master/candidates/2022_H2/... Hi StarlingX TSC candidates, I would like to use the opportunity to ask you a question as part of the TSC election campaign period. Growing and diversifying the community has been an important topic for the project since its inception. What is your strategy to support this effort? For instance, how would you lower the barriers for newcomers to enter and start participating in the community? Ive always championed people who were unaware of starlingx by advocating to them the solution, Ive also started the process to bring more user knowledge to the community where we saw ourselves struggle, like building images, and platform updates/upgrades between revisions I have also had a few extensive conversations about bringing forth better methods of communications, other then lists where users can possibly get faster responses to questions. Among other things contributing to documentation fixes that we came across during numerous installations over time, that we felt could be inaccurate or also potentially unclear to new users. I have also made numerous suggestions as to making the iso more readily findable via the primary web page. I also have worked to contribute back features we found potentially useful to the userbase, such as the work to prototype wireguard. As i'm sure I will continue to advocate StarlingX to people who didnt know it exists, and also champion it among many verticles, including telecom and IOT. Contributions from a diverse community is a valuable aspect of developing in an open source project. Unfortunately StarlingX has not been able to leveraged this value because of our lack of diversity in the community. Long term contributors to open source projects are typically 'users' of the open source project. Therefore focusing on supporting, growing and diversifying the 'users' of StarlingX will be a good first step in diversifying both users and contributors of StarlingX. In the past, StarlingX's approach to "support" of new "users" of StarlingX has been somewhat of a "best effort" approach across the entire StarlingX community ... i.e. with no clear owner. As a result, for a variety of reasons, this approach has just not worked. As suggested by an OIF board member at a recent StarlingX update meeting, an alternative approach would be to find a StarlingX community member (or two) whose 'primary' role is to support new users and contributors in the StarlingX community. This would include both re-active and pro-active aspects of support. I.e. this would include timely responses to questions on StarlingX mailing list and StarlingX IRC channel, with followups to ensure new user is 'successful' in evaluating StarlingX, with followups to understand new user's use case for StarlingX, improving the StarlingX website for new users, work to make 'kicking the tires' on StarlingX easier, holding StarlingX user hands-on sessions online and at major conferences, etc. . As TSC, I would like to pursue this approach support of StarlingX. Greg. -----Original Message----- From: Ildiko Vancsa <ildiko@openinfra.dev> Sent: Tuesday, November 8, 2022 7:35 PM To: StarlingX ML <starlingx-discuss@lists.starlingx.io> Subject: Re: [Starlingx-discuss] TSC Election Campaigning started CAUTION: This email comes from a non Wind River email account! Building a community at a high level is a two-step process. The first is step is attracting the users. The second step is onboarding and maintaining users. Each step has many barriers. "Why StarlingX?" is a significant barrier for users considering/reviewing StarlingX. There are many factors that influence the selection process. One of the biggest factor is the features. And, an easy way to understand various capabilities will greatly aid the selection process. Blogs and Demo videos greatly assist in providing an overview of capabilities and learn them without setting up environments (or going through elaborate process). After a user has selected StarlingX, next step is onboarding and maintaining them. There are many barriers in this area. Below are some of them (not an exhaustive list). 1. Cultural differences (Depending on their background, they may expect real time communication) 2. Technical challenges (They may not realize the resources needed to develop/use, lack of technical skills, support expectations) 3. Newcomer characteristics. * Behavior (underestimate the time/support, may lack patience, may lack commitment) * Background (Expectations based on experience with other communities) 4. Documentation challenges(information overload, missing documentation) There are many barriers to onboarding and maintaining users. There may be a need to have multiple approaches to assist diverse community members. As a TSC, I would focus on the first step of attracting the users. In collaboration with project teams, I will contribute to blogs and demos where appropriate. Regards, Ram P.S.: If you have not seen it already, here is a demo showcasing the scalability of StarlingX (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3uGlKLNoRE). It’s also accessible from the StarlingX home page (https://www.starlingx.io/). -----Original Message----- From: Ildiko Vancsa <ildiko@openinfra.dev> Sent: Tuesday, November 8, 2022 7:35 PM To: StarlingX ML <starlingx-discuss@lists.starlingx.io> Subject: Re: [Starlingx-discuss] TSC Election Campaigning started CAUTION: This email comes from a non Wind River email account!
