Copilot free subscription for open source maintainers question
Hi StarlingX Community, A couple weeks ago there was a question on the Community Call about GitHub Copilot, as it has a free subscription tier for open source maintainers. The question was, whether the OpenInfra Foundation can help the contributors of the projects it supports to have access to this free subscription tier. The GitHub Copilot documentation defines eligibility as the following: “A free subscription for GitHub Copilot is available to verified students, teachers, and maintainers of popular open-source repositories on GitHub.” First and foremost, the definition is very vague on what counts as a 'popular project’, which leaves it to GH’s discretion who qualifies and who doesn’t, which don’t have control or negotiating power over. The above description also refers to repositories on GitHub, where StarlingX is not maintained on GitHub, even though the code is mirrored there, which also breaks the criteria as currently worded. The OpenInfra AI guidelines are currently being drafted by the OpenInfra Foundation Board of Directors, and is currently under legal review. I cannot yet tell with certainty if Copilot is a tool that generates output that is compatible with the guidelines in terms of license compatibility, etc. Based on the above, we are unfortunately not able to help with getting the desired free Copilot subscription. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks and Best Regards, Ildikó ——— Ildikó Váncsa Director of Community Open Infrastructure Foundation
