[Starlingx-discuss] Including StarlingX in university mentorship programs
Hi StarlingX Community, I’m reaching out to you about getting StarlingX included in the university mentorship programs that the OpenInfra Foundation is fostering. Background: The OpenInfra Foundation has been working with universities as well as other organizations to run mentorship programs, where students and mentees are contributing to OpenInfra projects as part of the programs. So far the most programs have been targeting OpenStack and Kata Containers. Recently there have been interest in adding StarlingX to these programs as a participating project! Some details about the programs: - Students and mentees are working on tasks identified by mentors from the participating open source community. * Mentors usually try to come up with ideas for work items that can realistically fit the program’s timeframe, knowing that students often have much less knowledge and experience than working professionals. * You can find previous project proposals here for reference: https://etherpad.opendev.org/p/CM-project-proposals - University programs as well as other mentorship programs have fixed time periods, within which the students need to finish their project. * University programs are typically last a single semester - either August to December or January to May * Outreachy is a 3-month mentorship program that also runs twice a year * Other programs might be longer or operate with a different cadence - Mentors are project contributors who volunteer to participate in these programs * Mentors identify the project/task that students are going to be working on * Mentors help students throughout the course of the mentorship program - Often having a weekly or bi-weekly sync meeting to ensure the students make progress and have their questions answered - Helping students and mentees to get in touch with the broader community, and help them communicate and get their questions answered on the community’s communication channels You can find more information about the programs and how they work in the below articles and presentation recording: - https://superuser.openinfra.dev/articles/university-program-partner-with-ins... - https://superuser.openinfra.dev/articles/contributor-qa-a-college-students-e... - https://superuser.openinfra.dev/articles/students-of-openinfra-ashley-rodrig... - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygikkNAYL0w&ab_channel=OpenInfraFoundation This would be a great opportunity for the StarlingX community to raise further awareness of the project, gain new contributors and further enhance onboarding documentation and processes. Please let me know if you have questions to any of the above. Who from the community would be interested and available to volunteer as mentors? Thanks and Best Regards, Ildikó ——— Ildikó Váncsa Director of Community Open Infrastructure Foundation
