[Starlingx-discuss] StarlingX Logo Concepts
Hello StarlingX Team, I’m James, a graphic designer with the OpenStack Foundation. We’ve been working on a few logo concepts for StarlingX and wanted to get your thoughts. There were quite a few possibilities for this, but we narrowed it down three concepts, all with the same overarching theme—using multiple component pieces to create one unifying symbol as a nod to edge network components. The first features an X icon that is partially created using a bird silhouette. The second is also an X, but it is formed in part by a number of small dots. The third uses a bird as the central icon, with a texture created from a photo of a Starling murmuration. We have not explored color yet since we’re hoping to get your thoughts about form and concept before moving to the smaller details, but feel free to share any ideas on color you think make sense. I’ve attached a PDF showing all three concepts. It is also available on Dropbox in case you can’t view the attachment. <https://www.dropbox.com/s/iam6gbjd70nhkop/StarlingX_Logo_Concepts.pdf?dl=0> Looking forward to hearing what you think! +1 Concept 1. I like that it is simple and can be self-contained (i.e. without text) and still recognizable. Not sure the other two could do that. +1 for concept 1... how about playing with the width of the "\" in the logo? taking this into consideration, the way it can be seen might be as follows: 1. As it is, the focus in the logo is shared between the "\" and our dear starling, and I assume the width of the "\" is the same width as our starling's body. 2. How about changing the "\" to the same width of our starling's tail? Would that put more attention into our bird?

I like this one the best, alas it reminds me of one of the older X11 logos [0]. Maybe it is sufficiently different to not be an issue. Mirroring it horizontally might be an option except for the 'facing left' subtext for us left-to-right readers. (forward is often subconsciously to the right for us without additional context). dt [0] https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:X11.svg -- Dean Troyer dtroyer@gmail.com

Thanks again for all the feedback, everyone! I appreciate the design suggestions. It looks like Concept 1 is in the lead right now, but we’re going to keep this discussion open until next Monday so anyone else who wants to chime in has a chance to do so. Thank you! Hi everybody, Thanks for your feedback on the logos last week! Concept 1 was the clear winner based on your comments, so I’ve been playing around with colors. The attached document (also on Dropbox <https://www.dropbox.com/s/mgiu2qwtdiyrvqg/StarlingX_Logo_Colors.pdf?dl=0>) shows two color combinations sampled from colors from this starling image <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hildebrandt's_starling#/media/File:Lamprotornis_hildebrandti_-Tanzania-8-2c.jpg>. The logo works in both one or two colors and on dark or light backgrounds. There are a few mockups in the document as well. Please let me know if you like the purple or yellow versions better, or if you think we should try any other colors (these don’t have to be the final colors if you aren’t drawn to either of the options). Thank you! James Cole Graphic Designer OpenStack Foundation

Looking forward to hearing what you think!
