[Starlingx-discuss] Offline docker images install?
Hi All, I apologise if this has been covered somewhere, did a bit of searching...what if I want to install all the docker images for stx from an offline file. Was there some mention of these being included in the ISO (thought maybe I'd heard that), or can I import them prior to installation of openstack? Mostly I am coming from the perspective of the upcoming stx workshop at the openinfra summit. Would like to avoid students having to all download at the same time, or all hitting a local proxy, if possible. Sorry if I missed it. Thanks, Curtis PS. Thanks for the docs at https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/StarlingX/Containers/Installation ran through it today, all good. :) -- Blog: serverascode.com

Cristopher has setup an internal/local docker registry with all needed images. I think he can (tomorrow, today is Mexican holiday) give more insights on this.
If anyone has any hints on this, I'm running into a problem where kubeadm init seems to be failing during config_controller when using an alternative registry for all the public ones. Not finding meaningful error messages yet. Thanks, Curtis

Erich & Cristopher, We’ll have to add a wiki page for setting up a private registry, would you please add the recipes for that? Including all the images need by starlingx. I planned to do that after I finish my current story, but in case more people are asking about the private registry these days, at least an image list is needed asap. This would be very helpful. I've based my private registry on a stx install from the public regsitries. But it was a fairly convoluted process to determine image names and tags, strip public repo names from the names, and get them saved, imported, and pushed to the registry, but I've only done this once and I'm assuming there must be an easier way to save and upload images to a private registry. :) Thanks, Curtis

FYI, it turns out I was using "docker import" and should have been using "docker load". It appears docker import flattens the images and you lose some things like entrypoint, cmd, etc. Thanks for the help, Curtis On Fri, Mar 22, 2019 at 8:22 AM Curtis <serverascode@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks, updated. The images are definitely in the registry with the tags you are looking for. Some images are pulled from the registry, but around when config_controller fails there are no connections to the registry...I've been tcpdumping registry traffic. Anyways, I'll just post comments and such in the bug. Thanks for your help!, Curtis

I do not know about workshop outline and resources the attendees would need to take but here you have one idea that have worked out for me in workshops: - It is always good to try the pre-work option, share with a attendees a list of steps / resources to complete before day 1. Not all attendees will complete but your network will handle fewer connections. - If those instructions are shared in advance, attendees can be early involved in our community by asking them to follow our Installation instructions and ask them to make changes and fix things for a reward to be delivered in day 1 :) P.D. You will be one of our reviewers for the transition from the wiki to the StarlingX documentation site.

Curtis,
I apologise if this has been covered somewhere, did a bit of searching...what if I want to install all the docker images for stx from an offline file. Was there some mention of these being included in the ISO (thought maybe I'd heard that), or can I import them prior to installation of openstack?
Mostly I am coming from the perspective of the upcoming stx workshop at the openinfra summit. Would like to avoid students having to all download at the same time, or all hitting a local proxy, if possible.
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/StarlingX/Containers/Installation ran through it today, all good. :)
I do not know about workshop outline and resources the attendees would need to take but here you have one idea that have worked out for me in workshops:
Thanks Abraham. :)
- It is always good to try the pre-work option, share with a attendees a list of steps / resources to complete before day 1. Not all attendees will complete but your network will handle fewer connections.
There won't be any pre-work for the attendees, they'll just show up and have access to everything they need to complete the workshop. The pre-work will be automated and using packet.com's infrastructure and likely ansible.
- If those instructions are shared in advance, attendees can be early involved in our community by asking them to follow our Installation instructions and ask them to make changes and fix things for a reward to be delivered in day 1 :)
Yeah we can make everything available beforehand for sure. But the style of workshop is that anyone can show up and as long as they have an ssh terminal, some command line experience, and the ability to cut and paste commands they should be good. :)
P.D. You will be one of our reviewers for the transition from the wiki to the StarlingX documentation site.
Sounds good. Thanks, Curtis -- Blog: serverascode.com
