[Starlingx-discuss] Re-branding wrsroot proposal
Folks, We talked about some of the branding changes at the PTG just now and one item to try and tackle now for this release would be changing wrsroot to some alternative. This will be a pretty mechanical change, it will touch the integ, config, metal, and update repos. There might be a couple places where this can be placed in a variable or parameter. There is currently a storyboard titled "Change wrsroot to stxuser" [0]. There was some initial discussion at the PTG regarding the new user name. We want to avoid stx, or starlingx and "root", in the name it should remain more generic. One obvious choice is: admin Please reply with additional suggestions before next week's TSC (5/9). Ultimately, this change will require changes to tests, test frameworks, scripts (such as deployment tools) and documentation. [0] https://storyboard.openstack.org/#!/story/2004716 Thanks for your input. Sau!
Saul, One drawback with using admin is it may cause some confusion with the identically named OpenStack admin user. How about "stxadmin" instead? Is there a concern with using "stx" in the user name? Yes, there is concern about using stx in the name, as mentioned in my initial email we want to avoid stx, root, starlingx, it should remain generic. I think the same concern of using wrs in the name, it might obsucre or not be meaningful. Sau!

I guess I'm less concerned about using stx or starlingx than others. Obviously "wrs" is bad since it is tied to a company. But it seems common practice to use the project name for the default user (think nova, neutron, glance, etc...). Just to be devil's advocate here, sysadmin could easily already be in use on a future port of this stuff to another platform. From a security standpoint, it would be on an easily guessed list of userids for black hat penetration testing. The only reason I'd be reluctant to include a project identifier is because those things can change and this is just painful enough to not want to do again.
'admin' has other uses at the OS level, we need to be clear enough to not cause confusion there. Unless it has other similar uses 'sysadmin' is the best I have heard and I do not have a better suggestion.
Just to be devil's advocate here, sysadmin could easily already be in use on a future port of this stuff to another platform.
From a security standpoint, it would be on an easily guessed list of userids for black hat penetration testing.

Of those, I'd prefer "sysadm". It's very accurate and stays generic enough in its purpose. It's an account for system administration, with no implications about the purpose of the system or when it's used. So for me: sysadmin or sysadm (and I save 25% typing with sysadm!!) -----Original Message----- From: Saul Wold [mailto:sgw@linux.intel.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2019 10:53 AM To: Penney, Don; starlingx-discuss@lists.starlingx.io Subject: Re: [Starlingx-discuss] Re-branding wrsroot proposal On 5/7/19 7:37 AM, Penney, Don wrote:

The only reason I'd be reluctant to include a project identifier is because those things can change and this is just painful enough to not want to do again.
'admin' has other uses at the OS level, we need to be clear enough to not cause confusion there. Unless it has other similar uses 'sysadmin' is the best I have heard and I do not have a better suggestion.
Just to be devil's advocate here, sysadmin could easily already be in use on a future port of this stuff to another platform.
From a security standpoint, it would be on an easily guessed list of userids for black hat penetration testing.
It also shows up on the Big Username Blacklist.

We seem to be landing on "sysadmin" and I started to look at the changes, I forgot to point out we also needed to change the wrs_protected group name. I suggest that we go with 'sys_protected' as the groupname unless there are other suggestions. I will bring this up in tomorrow's TSC meeting so we can get it changed soon. We talked about some of the branding changes at the PTG just now and one item to try and tackle now for this release would be changing wrsroot to some alternative.

Please reply with additional suggestions before next week's TSC (5/9).
Ultimately, this change will require changes to tests, test frameworks, scripts (such as deployment tools) and documentation.

I did my first pass and rebuild my ISO today, and I realized another item that needs tobe addressed, the sysadmin password! I vaugely remember seeing the encoded entry someplace and now of course I can't find it again. If someone can point me to the location, I will apply a change there as well. Good news is so far, I can boot and login to the C-0 node with sysadmin/old password. Thanks in advance! Sau! On 5/8/19 10:16 AM, Saul Wold wrote:

If you mean the encrypted password, they are in: /opt/platform/.keyring/19.01/python_keyring/crypted_pass.cfg You can also use keyring command to get/set/del passwords from the keyring. Andy

I may be misleading ... wrsroot is a local, per-host Operation System account, it is not in keyring. (keyring has openstack user accounts in it). Changing wrsroot password has to be done on active controller to propagate to all other unlocked-active hosts in the cluster. Andy

Hi Saul, The initial password "wrsroot" is defined in file: stx-integ/config-files/sudo-config/centos/sudo-config.spec %define WRSROOT_P N8LRObqPlSGUc And it is generated by cmd: openssl passwd wrsroot In case you want to change this password to "sysadmin", you just need run "openssl passwd sysadmin", and update "WRSROOT_P" with the new value.
