[Starlingx-discuss] ACTION REQUIRED >> RE: The impact of helm chart repo deprecation
Hi Mingyuan, Thank you for raising this important concern. Don had a quick look and it appears that there are two armada applications in StarlingX that get their charts from the location below: monitor-armada-app/centos_tarball-dl.lst:helm-charts-92b6289ae93816717a8453cfe62bad51cbdb8ad0.tar.gz#helm-charts#https://github.com/helm/charts/archive/92b6289ae93816717a8453cfe62bad51cbdb8... nginx-ingress-controller-armada-app/centos_tarball-dl.lst:helm-charts-92b6289ae93816717a8453cfe62bad51cbdb8ad0.tar.gz#helm-charts#https://github.com/helm/charts/archive/92b6289ae93816717a8453cfe62bad51cbdb8... I expect these charts will need to be copied to the corresponding StarlingX armada-app repo and the build changed to point to the new location. @Ansari, Sabeel<mailto:Sabeel.Ansari@windriver.com> please handle the required changes for nginx-ingress-controller-armada-app @Smith, Kevin<mailto:Kevin.Smith@windriver.com> please handle the required changes for monitoring-armada-app. (is this app getting built still?) According to the announcement, the helm charts in this repo will be no longer available. Hi Folks, The deprecation notice states that the repo will be put into archive mode, which is a standard practice for public GitHub repos to maintain the repo as read-only. Therefore, the builds will be able to pull the referenced sha download even after the repo is archived. We definitely need to plan out a move to the new maintained chart repos, but it shouldn’t have an immediate impact. “At 1 year, support for this project will formally end, at which point the stable and incubator chart repos will be marked obsolete. At that time these chart repos will likely be garbage collected and no longer available. This git repository will remain as an archive.” From: Ghada Khalil <Ghada.Khalil@windriver.com> Date: Friday, October 30, 2020 at 1:21 PM To: "Qi, Mingyuan" <mingyuan.qi@intel.com>, "Smith, Kevin" <Kevin.Smith@windriver.com>, "Ansari, Sabeel" <Sabeel.Ansari@windriver.com> Cc: "starlingx-discuss@lists.starlingx.io" <starlingx-discuss@lists.starlingx.io>, "Penney, Don" <Don.Penney@windriver.com>, "Little, Scott" <Scott.Little@windriver.com>, "Peters, Matt" <Matt.Peters@windriver.com>, "Church, Robert" <Robert.Church@windriver.com> Subject: ACTION REQUIRED >> RE: The impact of helm chart repo deprecation Hi Mingyuan, Thank you for raising this important concern. URL's listed in our centos_tarball-dl.lst are mirrored by cengn. e.g. https://github.com/helm/charts/archive/92b6289ae93816717a8453cfe62bad51cbdb8... has been mirrored as ... http://mirror.starlingx.cengn.ca/mirror/centos/github.com/helm/charts/archiv... So we have at least one backup should github stop serving that url. Also, depending on the arguments you pass to the download scripts, you might already be using the cengn mirrored copy. I still haven't found any text indicating a limited retention period for GitHub archived projects. I think we are good. As an added finding, GitHub's archived projects with open source licenses are shared with the Software Heritage Foundation and the Internet Archive, providing an additional backups. https://web.archive.org/web/20201029092104/github.com/helm/charts https://archive.softwareheritage.org/browse/origin/directory/?origin_url=htt...
