+1 for concept 1... how about playing with the width of the "\" in the logo? 
taking this into consideration, the way it can be seen might be as follows: 

1. As it is, the focus in the logo is shared between the "\" and our dear starling, 
     and I assume the width of the "\" is the same width as our starling's body.
2. How about changing the "\" to the same width of our starling's tail? Would that
     put more attention into our bird?
