Re: [Starlingx-discuss] Need support for starlingX 8 setup bring up.

TCS Confidential Hi Bruno/Team, Tried with different options but still facing issues with ssh to VM, not able to communicate through the Horizon clients also. Kubernetes services also not working in VM. Bruno, Python script was still on when VM is up and login was success, script is not exited, kubelet services configuration is failed. Can you suggest some work around here, we are also trying to resolve the issue. Thanks & Regards, Prashanthi.M From: Bruno Drugowick Muniz <Bruno.Muniz(a)encora.com> Sent: Thursday, May 4, 2023 7:29 PM To: Chandu Vangala <v.chandu(a)tcs.com>; Prashanthi Moligi <prashanthi.moligi(a)tcs.com> Cc: Nidhi Tomar <nidhi.tomar1(a)tcs.com>; Naga Sushma Gandrothu <g.nagasushma(a)tcs.com>; Meghana S <s.meghana10(a)tcs.com> Subject: Re: Need support for starlingX 8 setup bring up. TCS Confidential "External email. Open with Caution" I'm asking this question because I started a VM that I created with the script and it started the Kubelet services just fine. I wonder if this is a step in the middle of the config script where the service is not yet properly configured. TCS Confidential "External email. Open with Caution" Hello, Prashanthi. Answers in red: 1. Do we need to create VMs and then run your script or your script itself will create VMs also? * The script itself creates the VM 1. Do we need to create 3 VMS (storage, control, worker) or only one VM is enough? * Our current under-review version of the script only works for the AIO-SX (All-In-One Simplex) setup. This setup doesn't include storage. * Since what we have so far is still not merged to the main branch, you need to check out the patchset we have under review. I'll send the instructions again (see below). * Again, I reinstate the importance of understanding that this is a WIP effort under review by the community that already got my team several working installations of StarlingX under VirtualBox that developers can use to get to know and do small tests with it. * I only share this because you seem to be having similar problems that I saw recently in my team, so a mostly automated setup can be helpful for the developers that plan to work with the solution. Below are the steps that I sent in another thread. These are for a Debian-based operating system, tested in Ubuntu and Pop!_OS: # Install dependencies sudo apt install virtualbox git rsync sshpass openssh-client python3-pip python3-venv # Set up NAT Network to be used in VirtualBox VBoxManage natnetwork add --netname NatNetwork --network 10.10.10.0/24 --dhcp off --ipv6 on # Creating port forward for 8080 since for 22 it's created by the Python script currently VBoxManage natnetwork modify --netname NatNetwork --port-forward-4 http-8080:tcp:[]:8080:[10.10.10.3]:8080 # Clone /tools repo to help with the installation mkdir -p starlingx cd starlingx git clone --depth 1 https://opendev.org/starlingx/tools.git # Downloads patchset that contains the scripts under review by the community cd tools git fetch https://review.opendev.org/starlingx/tools refs/changes/70/880870/11 && git checkout FETCH_HEAD # Configure Python's virtual environment cd deployment/virtualbox/pybox python3 -m venv venv source ./venv/bin/activate pip install --upgrade pip pip install -r requirements.txt # Download StarlingX ISO wget -N https://mirror.starlingx.cengn.ca/mirror/starlingx/release/latest_release/d… -O ./stx-8.iso # Start the installation python3 ./install_vbox.py --setup-type AIO-SX \ --iso-location "./stx-8.iso" \ --labname Prashanthi --install-mode serial \ --config-files-dir ./configs/aio-sx/ \ --config-controller-ini ./configs/aio-sx/stx_config.ini_centos \ --ansible-controller-config ./configs/aio-sx/localhost.yml \ --vboxnet-type nat \ --vboxnet-name NatNetwork \ --nat-controller0-local-ssh-port 3122 \ --controller0-ip 10.10.10.3 \ --ini-oam-cidr '10.10.10.0/24' Notice on this last command that the --setup-type is equal to AIO-SX. This is the only installation type that our branch/patchset currently supports. Our idea is to bring these scripts back to a working state since people haven't touched then in about 4 years now. In this link, you find the script with all the steps above that you can download and run standalone: https://paste.opendev.org/show/bciA9x0pZbsPmkgT5URs/. But it's important to understand each step above so you can debug eventual problems easier. TCS Confidential "External email. Open with Caution" Prashanthi, I agree, Litao and Greg are on the right track here. It looks like a problem in the config and if you answer what Greg is asking we should be able to quickly figure out what exactly is wrong. Answers in red for the questions you asked: * Can I use same baremetal ISO for VM environment also * Yes * Will below scripts automate only VM environment, not bare metal? * VM environments (especifically VirtualBox) are what we're working on right now, yes. * I am currently working with latest StarlingX 8 version, is it stable or can we switch starlingX7? * The latest version (8) is stable. You can use it, yes. I don't want to get in the way of "debugging" your current bare metal installation, but I want to give you options and you decide if they make your life easier or not. I made a script for myself that is simultaneously kind of a "short version" of this installation guide<https://docs.starlingx.io/r/stx.8.0/deploy_install_guides/release/virtual/a…> and also something that you can just run on a Debian-based Linux box. I personally tested/used it on 2 different Ubuntu 20.04 boxes several times already. The script is here: https://paste.opendev.org/show/bciA9x0pZbsPmkgT5URs/. Feel free to reach me on IRC (you can find me, brunomuniz, on the StarlingX channel) if you want more synchronous help with it. Can you provide the following info * AFTER you do the INITIAL USB SOFTWARE INSTALL * AND AFTER YOU login for the first time as sysadmin/sysadmin … and change the password * AND AFTER YOU RUN ‘sudo dhclient <ifname>’ in order to get your initial IP Address * Can you run the following and send me the outputs * ip link * ip addr * ping 8.8.8.8 * can you also send me the contents of the /home/sysadmin/localhost.yml that you are using ? thanks Greg. TCS Confidential "External email. Open with Caution" Hi, Prashanthi. Currently, my team is working on changing some existing Python/Shell scripts, and with our changes so far you can get an installation of StarlingX AIO-SX in VirtualBox from a Debian box without too much trouble (almost 100% automated). For reference: * AIO: Al-In-One, means that the same machine (vm) will have more than one responsibility (controller and worker in this case) * SX: Simplex, means that only a single controller will be used. I don't know if this is enough for the PoC that you want to do, but in case this helps, our changes are currently under review here: https://review.opendev.org/c/starlingx/tools/+/880870<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/review.opendev.org/c/starlingx/tools/*/8…>. Let me know if this is helpful and I can put a quick Shell script together that will get you the code with our changes and perform the installation for you. Hi Prashanthi, MEC services/app is supposed to be run as a standard k8s workload in pod (deployment, service, etc), you can launch your via kubectl, helmchart, or other ways available on k8s. And the GPU, High speed NIC, or accelerator support are available in StarlingX which may be used by MEC application. As I know, there is no publicly announced MEC applications running on StarlingX, but as I can see it is capable to carry the MEC workload you mentioned. And as Greg pointed, we have many commercial solutions for 5G vRAN solutions. Yes Greg, MEC I meant “computing capabilities at the edge of the mobile network, within the Radio Access Network (RAN) and in close proximity to mobile subscribers.” Dose starlingX platform supports to run MEC services or applications? Do we have any MEC applications available with starlingX, like we have in Akarino blueprints (Ex: 5G cloud Gaming, HD video, Live broadcasting)? If yes, I want to bring up starlingX platform ASAP, for that I need your support, if possible can we have one teams call and discuss about bring up issues. Thanks, Prashanthi. TCS Confidential Hi Greg, Yes, we were able to get internet connectivity by running DHCP client command, IP is also getting allocate. Thanks for your support and working on further configurations. Have few doubts about that: 1. Are all the configurations mandatory, For example I want to run my containers on Kubernetes, is openstack configurations has to be done or optional?? [Greg] OpenStack is optional. There are many users of StarlingX that only use the base StarlingX Kubernetes Platform. 2. After completing all setting, if I want run MEC services/applications how to run those containers in this server, do you have any applications available along with starlingX? 3. Please share document, if you have any to configure MEC. Hey Prashanthi, Before I try to find someone to work closely with you on this … can you try the following solutions. So, you say that your ISO install completes and you are able to login as ‘sysadmin’ (initial password is ‘sysadmin’ and you are forced to change it). But then you have no IP connectivity. So I learned that automatic DHCP does not seem to be working with our DEBIAN loads (STX 8.0) So two options for you to try: * Run ‘dhclient’ manually * RUN THE FOLLOWING: * sudo dhclient <ifname> * * WHERE <ifname> is the linux interface name of the interface that is physically cabled to a router that gives you internet access * OR * Configure IP Address and Default IP Route manually * RUN THE FOLLOWING: * sudo ip address add <IP-ADDRESS>/<SUBNET-LENGTH> dev <PORT> * sudo ip link set up dev <PORT> * sudo ip route add default via <GATEWAY-IP-ADDRESS> dev <PORT> * ping 8.8.8.8<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/8.8.8.8__;!!AjveYdw8EvQ!c2QTPp_0Xx4jJQ1va…> * * WHERE <PORT> is the linux interface name of the interface that is physically cabled to a router that gives you internet accdess <IP-ADDRESS>/<SUBNET-LENGTH> is the IP ADDRESS for your server (i.e. StarlingX controller-0) based on your local addressing plan <GATEWAY-IP-ADDRESS> is the IP ADDRESS of your adjacent router. Let me know if that works first, Greg.
